Composite (x)Bow Quest
| The Compostie (x)Bow can be made in several variations of varying levels of quality depending on the components used for each piece. You can also add an attack bonus and (x)Bow Master spells by adding an optional handle made from an (High) Undead Thighbone after putting the rest of the bow together. If you are to complete this quest you will need several skills and spend a good deal of time hunting. The other option is to trade for everything which will take less time, but you won't have the sense of accomplishment. You will need a Cook to cure the Lugian Senews, Alchemy to make the String, Fletching to carve the Handle and you will have to make a trip to Ayan Baqur to have the horns carved.
There are different quality components for each part of the bow and you can mix and match low/medium/high level components, but some items need to be done in exact pairs. For example, it doesn't matter if you use the small or large sinews on the carved horns, but you must use 2 of the exact same sinews or the arms will not combine. |

Needed Items to make (x)Bow

Making Stock for Crossbow
The Stock is only used to make the Composite Crossbow. You wil have to take your Wood Golem Heart to Stonehold (68.8N, 21.5W) and find Barnar the Tinker. He will craft your wood Golem Heart into the Crossbow Stock for you.
Lugian Sinews
Small Lugian Sinews come from Amploth, Obeloth and Lithos Lugians. Large Lugian Sinews come from Gigas, Extas and Taitus Lugians. You will need 2 cured Sinews of the same quality to finish the (x)bow. If you want to do this yourself you will need a Cooking Pot and a pretty decent cloking skill to make. The Cured Sinews come in 3 varities depending on your cooking skill and which type of Sinew you use.
I am not sure exactly what benefit the various Sinews have, but I believe that they effect your weapon speed. I have never tried to make a bow with anything but the best so I have no personal experience in what the lower ones give you. Hunting tips: Casa de Lugie... better known as the Lugian Citadels. It shouldn't take you long to find what you are looking for, the sinews tend to litter the floor of the place. The large Sinews are a little harder to find, but even they shouldn't take you long. |

Making the (x)Bow Arms & Stave
Making the Arms requires both the Horns (Mattekar or Auroch) and the Cured Sinews. The Fire Auroch Horns only come from Bulls, so don't waste time killing anything else. The type of horn determines the Defense bonus of the bow (Auroch = +2%, Mattekar = +6%) as well as the colour of the bow. Most people want the better defense bonus so they will end up with the orange colour, but if you use the Auroch horns your bow will be white. It may not be quite as good, but at least it will look a little different. It is very important that both arms are made exactly the same or you will not be able to combine them.
Hunting Tips: The Linvak Range East of Qalaba'r is a great place to find Mattekars, but it can take a long time to get them as the drop rate is pretty low. |
To get the horns carved you'll need to take them to Ayan Baqur. Once there find Yuan Hanzu and he will carve them for you.
Once you have the Shaped Horns you combine them with the Cured Sinews. Use the Sinew on the Horn for the composite Arm. You can use any quality of Lugian Sinew, but you must use 2 of the exact same types or the arms will not combine! Next you combine the two arms to get a Composite Stave. Up to this point there is no skill check for anything other than making the Sinews and the stave can be given away. The next step is to string the bow... |
The String
SKILL CHECK :There is no skill check for braiding the tongues / Guts, but there is a skill check to oil the string. You will need an Alchemy Sikll in the area of 250 to have much of a chance of making an Excellent Oiled String, but you should have over 275 skill to be consistant.
Oiled String: Failed Oiling of braded Scalvus Tongues
Fine Oiled String: Made from "applying oil liberally to Braided Scalvus Tongues or a failed attempt at oiling teh Braided Drudge Ravener Guts. Excellent Oiled String: Made from applying oil liberally to Braided Drudge Ravener Guts. "You apply oil liberally to the string." |
No Strings Attached
The quality of the string use determines the damage mod of the bow as well as the difficulty of stringing the bow.
"You deftly attach the string to the stave."
Up until now you could have somebody do the work for you. Stringing the bow makes it no drop/give, so you will have to do it yourself. This does require a bow skill check and the requirements for stringing a bow with an Excellent Oiled String seem to be 200+ base. ( maybe a little lower now that there are level 7 spells.) You will want your skill to be at least 250 to have a 50/50 shot at it. A skill of 275 will give you a much better chance of stringing the bow. The best thing to do is have a mage buff you with cord and bow master as high as he can and then use the string on the bow. It took me 3 tries at a base skill of 200, 205 and 210 to string my first bow and this can drive you mad! Unless you really *need* a no drop bow it isn't really worth going through the effort to make the composite bow unless you are going to be using the best string since that is where your damage mod. comes from. |
Get a handle on it!
Here is the next skill check. You must have a fletching skill to carfe the handle. Again, a skill of at least 250 is needed to have much of a chance of carving the highest quality handle. Again you can make 3 different kinds of handles.
Bone Handle made by carving an undead thighbone.
Intricate Bone handle is made by intricately carving an Undead Thighbone or a failed attempt to carve a Dark Revenant Thighbone. High Undead Handle is made by intricately carving a Dark Revenant Thingbone. |
| You do not need to attach a handle to your bow to be able to use it, but the attack bonus and spells it adds are really what make this a good bow. As with everything else there are various quaitys of handles you can use. There are 2 different thighbones you can use to get 3 different outcomes. A standard Undead Thighbone will give you the basic Bone Handle if you fail your fletching skill or the Intricatly carved Bone Handle. Using the thighbone of the High Undead (Dark Revenant) you will get the middle quality handle with a failed fletching skill or the highest quality handle.
You can find lots of thighbones in the Hall of Mentos or the Nexus. Often people don't even bother to pick them up since they really aren't worth very much anymore. |
